Assessment
The purpose of a music video is to sell the song and to let you remember it. Also it gives the listener a better understanding of the song if the video is narrative. The main purpose is to entertain people by showing off their talents to the whole world. To sell CDs and DVDs to viewers. Creating a memorable visual for the song increases its chance to sell, shops that do this is HMV, Amazon and other retailers. It also gives record companies a chance to see new coming artists such as You Tube so that they discover the next big thing.
Music videos are made to promote something, a famous example is James bond, every time a new film comes out they always gave a new song that promote James bond this time it was Sam smiths Writing on the wall which is the first James bond song to reach number 1 and this has some thing to do with the suspense on what the song is going to be because they keep it secret and this makes people want to listen to it because it will be the new face of James bond. The music video can also promote the band to know what kind of people they are and what music they will release over time, an example of this is One Direction, they are shown as the boys that the average girl wants to be with, happy, fun, caring, clean (annoying) ect.
Another part of music videos is synergy, this is when two types of media link together to promote one another. All over tv today synergy is happening sometimes without us even realising it like in adverts on the telly there will be music in the background and you might not pay attention to it but the song gets stuck in your head and your brain links it to the product it was advertising so you always remember the product. Films also do this, i have already mentioned James bond but most other films also do this with adding music in the background to add effect like action, tension sadness ect, without music most films would be terrible.
When an artist creates a song/music video their manager/producer will distribute their work and both the artist and manager earn a percentage of the earnings when people download/buy their songs. Youtube also do this, if a you tuber becomes popular youtube will contact them and ask if they want to become partners if the reply is yes then youtube will promote their work and the you tuber will have adds on their videos or even sponsors from other companies, this brings in money for the you tuber but youtube does take a large percentage. Examples of this is the groups OkGo Needing/Getting which used sponsorship to make money and they made around one million dollars but another way to make money is merch annotations and the video The Woman I Love by Jason Mraz uses it by putting links to their merchandise on the video so they can make money due to the video with links the money made is unknown because the sells could still be going on today. They both have good ways to make money, but the sponsorship has a limit on how much they pay but they will 100% gain a large amount of money but the merch does not have a limit but takes longer to make a large amount of money.
Music tracks need outlets to promote their work, there are many outlets they can use like television, radio and the internet. The internet is the largest outlet a music track can use due to all the video websites allover the internet and many people use the internet, in the past it was only a small few who could use it like young people but as time went on and the young people grow up and have kids themselves a much wider audience use the internet even the elderly use it now a days. An example of a music group using outlets is a band called LeRoy and to get noticed they put their group in the guardian newspaper, which is not the greatest newspaper to show off your music group because the target audience reading the guardian are adults and elderly.
There are both major and independent funded music videos both have good and bad aspects. For example a major company like Sony can spend millions of dollars on an artist or music video to get well known and popular and in their videos Sonys logo will be everywhere to get them more notice and the band agreed to this when they signed the contract with Sony, they even have a music website called Sony music where bands chosen by Sony are put on display for the world to see like, 99Souls, 2Cellos and A Great Big World. There are also much smaller unknown groups and they do not have the million dollars budget that big companies have like Sony so they have to use other means to get noticed. The most common way is YouTube because you are guaranteed to have the possibility to get millions of views unlike just playing for your local area where you can only have a small variety of people and not a wide taste range. Another way to get popular in the music industry is a website called Unsigned where small unknown groups put their music videos to be seen by other people and get comments, examples include Some music labels even search these independent groups on these indi websites to find something new and popular.
